CELEBRATING THE LIFE & LEGACY
It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we announce the passing of R.L. “Neat” Whitsett, who
peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. His angels escorted him to his heavenly
home in God’s glorious garden, leaving behind a legacy of faith, resilience, and love.
Born on August 8, 1955, in Perry County, Alabama, R.L. was the cherished youngest of Nathaniel and
Cleola Whitsett’s ten children. Though affectionately called “Neat” by friends and family, he never
accepted the role of the baby of the family, insisting on being embraced as an equal from an early age.
Raised in a household brimming with love, strength, and staunch support, he developed a vibrant spirit
and a kind heart that brightened every room.
While a student at Hale County High School, R.L. discovered his talent for many trades. He dedicated
himself to his work as a welder, pipelayer, cement mason, and chemical plant operator. A steadfast work
ethic and passion marked each of these roles. Through these endeavors, he instilled in his children the
mindset to “never settle” and to pursue excellence in all they do.
R.L. accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and became an active member of St. James
Baptist Church. Empowered by his faith and driven by a desire to build a lasting legacy for his family, he
became a pillar of strength for all who knew him. His unwavering devotion to God sustained him through
life’s challenges and inspired countless others in his community.
Whether casting a line while fishing, tracking game on a hunt, enjoying a spirited game of cards, or
singing gospel hymns, R.L. embraced every moment with boundless enthusiasm. He loved sports, music,
and, above all, his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His infectious laughter and
generous spirit turned ordinary gatherings into treasured memories.
R.L. is preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Cleola Whitsett; brothers A.C., J.T., Cleveland,
and Edward Whitsett; and sister Lily Mae Whitsett.
He is survived by his devoted children: Alvin (Lasaundra) Whitsett
(Tuscaloosa, AL), Lavares Jackson (Akron, AL), Tavares Jackson (Akron, AL),
Nekena (Steven) Lemon (Columbia, SC), and Reginald Smith (Moundville,
AL). He also leaves behind cherished siblings Shirley Wiggins (Detroit, MI),
Bessie Edwards (Moundville, AL), Willys (Anita) Whitsett (Moundville, AL),
and Roosevelt Whitsett (Moundville, AL); beloved grandchildren Keishun
Smith, Keiana Patterson, Tyshon Stewart, Tayvon Williams, Jaylon
Robichaux, Lavares Jackson Jr., Tyzavier Bell, Zavion Bell, Tyquan Bell, and
Zaylee Bell; one great-grandson, Romeo Smith; special niece and nephew
Verzelia Whitsett and Willie (Alisa) Whitsett; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
R.L. found his greatest joy in the simple blessings of life, grounded in his
unwavering love for the Lord, his family, and his friends. As a devoted son,
brother, father, and friend, he was always ready to offer a helping hand, share a
warm smile, or speak words of encouragement. Though his absence will be
deeply felt, his spirit endures in the hearts he touched and in the lasting legacy
he so lovingly built and meticulously curated.
